Water Systems - General Services Department - City of Concord NH
Sewer Systems
The sewer crew has seven full time employees. The
crew's work ranges from new construction to general maintenance of Concord
sanitary sewer system and storm drainage system.
Concord/ Penacook has approximately 147 miles
sanitary sewer mains. The sanitary sewer flows
to one of two treatment plants; the Hall Street Wastewater
Treatment Plant and the Penacook Wastewater Treatment Plant.
There are
approximately
160 miles of storm
drainage pipes. The runoff eventually ends up in the Merrimack River.
There are
4,021 + Sewer manhole covers, 3,153 + Drain manhole covers and 6,453 + Catch
Basins. The count grows each year.
Sewer Service Lateral The sewer
service line (lateral) is the line that runs from your house to the main out in
the street or right of way. The pipe diameter is usually between four and six
inches. The pipe may be constructed of clay, bermaco, asbestos cement, cast
iron, or plastic. Problems that can occur with a lateral are roots, grease,
sags, fatigue failure, foreign objects, frozen, and damage done by a contractor.
The City of Concord maintains the service from the
property line to the main. The property owner is
responsible for maintaining the plumbing from inside the house to the property
line. The City of Concord will respond to calls when the sewer is not running
out to the street if there is a history of problems in the City right of way, or
on a first time basis during our regular work hours, which are from 7:00AM to
3:30PM, Monday through Friday. However, if the call comes in after regular
hours, or on a holiday, we will advise the home owner that if we respond and the
problem is on the section of pipe that the home owner is responsible for they
could be charged for the time and equipment expended by our response.
We will also respond to odor
complaints. We may be able to tell what kind of problem you are having just by
sticking our noses near the area. There can be several reasons for the problem,
such as:
a leaking sewer pipe
an old trap that may be dried up
from lack of use
a mildew problem
there might be a dead animal laying
around somewhere.
The crew does mainly two types of
work. These include maintenance and new construction.
Maintenance Mains- Jet rod/vacuum, rodding machine, video, repair
damaged sections, reset manhole frames, silence noisy covers, periodic
inspection of system. Laterals- (sewer service line) relay/repair, rod, video, locate, dye
test, and discontinue. Miscellaneous- investigate sinkholes, foul odors, assist in inspection
work- Jet rod/vacuum, rodding machine, video, repair damaged sections, reset
manhole frames, silence noisy covers, periodic inspection of system.
New Construction
New construction- laterals, manholes and occasionally some main lines. Video of
laterals and mains, coring of manhole structures. When we do this work the crew
serves as a contractor to the person requesting the services above and we charge
the customer for these services. We will give an estimate at the customers’
request and if the estimate is accepted, the customer has to give a deposit in
the full amount of the estimate before we start any work. After the crews have
completed the work, the customer is refunded any of their deposit that was not
used.
Additionally at
times a manhole cover may rattle when a vehicle drives over it, with a call the
crew will do its best to silence it as soon as it can.
If you see someone pouring an illegal substance (motor oil, paint, gasoline
etc.) down a catch basin (storm drain), please call the General Services
Department at (603) 228-2737 or the State of New Hampshire D.E.S (603)-271-3503.
