The City has approximately 217 miles of roads to maintain, 18 bridges, 26 culverts sized 24" and larger and many culverts less than 24". The highway systems crew includes 23 full time employees responsible for maintaining the roads, sidewalks, bridges, culverts, street sweeping, leaf collection, signs, pavement markings, anti-icing treatments and snow plowing.
Road Maintenance
The road maintenance function is composed of pot hole patching, shoulder work, ditch
cleaning as well as digging, removing bad sections of road, replacing the road bed and
re-paving. Culvert repair, unplugging and building head walls.
Street Sweep Maintenance
The street sweeping task is performed by a
contractor that sweeps all the curbed streets once in the spring and then every other
month sweeps the main roads into the City. City personnel sweep the roads that do not have
curbs in the spring, as well as whenever necessary throughout the year.
Sign Maintenance
The sign crew maintains all the signs in the City's right of way and they also paint all
the pavement markings such as cross walks, stop bars and arrows. The division contracts
with the State of New Hampshire to do centerline striping and fog lines once per
year.
Leaf Collection
In late October and November, the
division collects tree leaves using two large vacuum units. The two crew will
traverse the city according to a schedule published in the Concord Monitor prior
to the start of this program. Leaves are collected from the edge of the
street or curb line. This program is for leaves only because the vacuum
units are not intended for other materials. No yard waste or tree/brush
waste will be collected.
Snow Fighting
Snow fighting consists of putting out salt to keep
the snow from adhering to the pavement and plowing and removing snow from the streets and
most sidewalks. The City removes snow in the downtown area to accommodate
vehicular parking.
