Water Systems

Percy Sanders in the first vehicle purchased by the Water Resource Division    The water distribution system is comprised of approximately 160 miles of water pipe of varying sizes, 1500 gate valves of varying sizes, 1300 City owned and 400 private hydrants and 10,500 service connections of varying sizes.

The crew consists of seven full time employees to maintain the water distribution lines.

The water service line is the line that runs from your house to the main out in the street or right of way.

The size of this line is usually ¾" or 1" for residential houses and 6" to 8" for a commercial building or a building needing a fire sprinkler system. The type of pipe is usually copper up to 2" and ductile iron for any size over 2". Problems that can occur with the lateral (service line) are fatigue, foreign objects, frozen, and damage done by a contractor. The City of Concord maintains the service from the property line to the main.  The property owner maintains plumbing from inside the house to the property line. The City of Concord will respond to a customer’s service call during our regular working hours, which are from 7:00AM to 3:30PM, Monday through Friday. However, if the call comes in after regular hours, or on a holiday, we will advise the home owner that if we respond and the problem is on the section of pipe that the home owner is responsible for they could be charged for the time and equipment expended by our response.

The crew does mainly two types of work. These include maintenance and new construction.

Maintenance
Mains – flush the entire system once per year, clean and operate the main line valves to insure they are open and working properly in case of an emergency and we have to shut down the water main for a leak or break.

Services – relay/repair, locate or discontinue.

Hydrants – paint in the summer, and shovel in the winter.

Miscellaneous – investigate dirty water compaints, odor complaints and low-pressure complaints.

New construction
Install a new service line or hydrant line for a new building to the property line. When we do this work the crew serves as a contractor to the person requesting the services above and we charge the customer for these services. We will give an estimate at the customers’ request and if the estimate is accepted, the customer has to give a deposit in the full amount of the estimate before we start any work. After the crews have completed the work, the customer is refunded any of their deposit that was not used.
