I was born in Concord, NH on September 4, 1947. My father was Charles Shurtleff and my mother was Margaret Sullivan Shurtleff. Her father, Tim Sullivan, represented Ward 4 on the Concord Board of Alderman (forerunner of today’s City Council) for two terms in the 1930’s.
I attended Concord public schools and graduated from Bishop Brady High School in 1966. After graduation I enlisted in the US Army for three years, serving one year in Vietnam with the 552nd Military Police Co. II Field Force Vietnam.
After my discharge from the military in 1969 I joined the Concord Police Department. In 1974 I was hired by the US Department of Justice, US Marshals Service as a Deputy US Marshal. My first duty station was Cleveland, OH and after three years there I was able to transfer home to the US Marshal’s office in Concord in 1977. I retired in 2000 as a Supervisory Deputy US Marshal.
Over the years, I acquired my Associates Degree and since my retirement I have been a substitute teacher in the Merrimack Valley School District, primarily in special needs classes. In 2004, I was elected to represent Concord Wards 1, 2 and 3 in the New Hampshire legislature. I was re-elected in 2006 and was named Assistant Majority Leader by the House Speaker. In 2007, I was elected City Councilor At Large and took office in November 2007 to fill the unexpired term of the late Councilor Red Brochu.
I have three wonderful children Seth, Kristie and Nate, a terrific daughter-in-law Suzanne and beautiful grand-daughter Sarah.
